I’m developing a presentation on creative writing for teens with illusions, original music and map, slides, and a brain. I’m really excited to share it, but I’ve caught a couple of comments that “teens don’t care, don’t waste your time.” Is that true? The local high school had to increase its number of creative writing classes and I’ve seen a list of teen writing and critique groups on-line (www.writing-world.com). Do teens generally not care about anything but their social life and “freedom”? Social life vs. goals/talents? Where do you guys stand?

Seriously??!!?? Someone said that “teens don’t care?” Wow! I could really get started on that one! The world has always been mostly populated with the lazy and apathetic. But…it also always has a few very special people who will make their mark. Mentors are SOOO important! Keep up the hard work. Your website is beautiful! I can’t wait to read your books. You have inspired me!
Actually, at my high school, there are quite a few students that do care. Our creative writing courses are filled with students that have a passion for writing, although there are some students that are looking for an easy “A”. Those students, however, get the shock of their lives when they realize they do have to write. I absolutely think it is well worth your time to develop this project for high schoolers because it is those that have the passion that you are trying to reach and those are the ones that will use this to the fullest extent.
I think Audria is right on in her statement that the the perception is growing in favor of teen laziness, but think of your high school days ma. Think of mine. What did we spend our free time doing? Writing. Creatively. It is an outlet, a form of expression and a tool in which we find ourselves during our most crucial growing period. I think it is a gift, a necessity, to provide these creative writing outlets to high school students. There is so much darkness in high schools now, the more I taught, the more I grew weary….let’s do all we can to shine some light in the midst of it all. Your classes are brilliant. Hesitate not!
